Costa Calida - The ‘warm coast’
Costa Calida is a breathtakingly beautiful place that abounds with natural beauty, from the craggy mountains, golden beaches to the nature reserves. Imagine how wonderful it feels to wake up to nature's refreshing beauty every morning instead of the buzz of never ending traffic.
Costa Calida's coastline runs from San Pedro del Pinatar, at the Northern end of the Mar Menor (‘Little Sea') to the South of Puerto de Mazarron. It consists of two sections: the North made up of the La Manga peninsula and Mar Menor and the South extending from the promontory of Cabo de Palos to the resort town of Aguilas
Murcia is a large inland town, which is the capital of the Costa Calida region. Murcia is also the name of the province.
Like the Southern Costa Blanca, the Costa Calida region has stunning beaches and rocky promontories with a backdrop of hills and mountains. However, the highlight here is the unique La Manga peninsula that creates the Mar Menor. This Costa is fresh and unspoiled compare to the other Southern Costas since apart from the historical city and port of Cartagena, there are no major towns along the coast.
The other major attractions here are the three nature reserves. At the northern extremity lie the salt flats of the Regional Park of San Pedro, which are heavily populated with flamingos, herons, storks and other migratory bird life. Especially made wooden walkways allow tourists to visit the whole area. Along the coastline from Cabo de Palos, Westwards towards the village of Portman, is the Calblanque Regional Park, a stretch of virgin coast with hills and empty beaches. The Marine Reserve of the Hormogas Isles, near Cabo de Palos, is world famous.
Visitors to the area will find world class golf courses, beautiful cities a range of wonderful cuisines and a choice of lifestyle and activities.

Mar Menor or ‘Little Sea' (top of page) is one of the major highlights of Costa Calida. It is a unique lagoon of some fifteen miles in length and is renowned for its clear waters, marinas and water sports. It contains 5 islands and its deepest point does not touch more than 7m. On an average it's 2 degrees warmer than the Mediterranean and can be accessed by a narrow channel at the northern tip of the peninsula. Two man-made canals traverse the peninsula at strategic points. Mar Menor is an area offering spectacular views, diverse scenery and something for everyone.
The waters of the Mar Menor are renowned for their health giving properties and are classified medicinal. The high concentration of salt and iodine, the absence of the strong waves, shallow waters and of course, its exceptional temperatures both in summer and winter, form a unique environment and convert the Mar Menor into the best therapeutic remedy.
The Mar Menor is also considered as one of the best areas for regatta and certain water sports which can be practised all year round. All the beaches are connected by means of a promenade and are equipped with showers and paths.
Undiscovered by tourism, this is an unspoilt area where the local language is Spanish! The area is quite flat and perfect for cyclists or those who do not wish to rely on a car. There are numerous beaches along the coast of Mar Menor.
